Waves
A grief education programme for adults bereaved by suicide
Waves: A Bereaved by Suicide Group
Waves is an eight‑week support programme run by Community Wellbeing North Canterbury for adults aged 18 and over who have experienced the loss of someone to suicide.
It offers a calm, caring space where people can come together, feel understood, and explore their grief at a pace that feels right for them. This is run one evening a week for eight weeks.
The programme combines gentle learning about grief and suicide with opportunities for conversation, reflection, and connection.
Each group is guided by two trained facilitators who help create an environment of safety, respect, and compassion.
Waves is designed to help people:
- Feel less alone by meeting others who are also navigating suicide loss
- Reduce the sense of isolation or stigma that can come with this type of bereavement
- Learn more about emotional, thinking, and social responses to grief
- Explore ways to care for themselves and their whānau, including tamariki and rangatahi
- Find small, hopeful steps toward healing and adjusting to life after loss
“I have learnt that I am not the only one. They (participants) have had the same emotions and similar experiences, and I am not alone”
